In September, the level of Lake Der is going down at the rate of 6 cm every day uncovering vast areas of mudflats and small islands which attract thousands of waders and ducks. You can reasonably hope to see up to 15 species of waders in a one-day birding trip. The common species include Little Ringed and Ringed Plovers, Northern Lapwing, Dunlin, Wood, Green and Common Sandpipers, Redshank and Spotted Redshank, Common Greenshank, Eurasian Curlew, Common Snipe and Ruff but you may also see less common visitors : Eurasian Oystercatcher, Pied Avocet, Grey and Golden Plovers, Red Knot, Curlew Sandpiper, Sanderling, Ruddy Turnstone, Little Stint, Black-tailed and Bar-tailed Godwits, Whimbrel are seen every autumn.

Purple Herons and Cattle Egrets can be seen until the end of the month while Great and Little Egrets are quite numerous. September is also the best month to look for Black Storks (more than 40 were counted on the lake on September 7 last year) and Eurasian Spoonbills can also be expected. 9 Greater Flamingoes were present last year on September 9 !

A few Common Cranes and about a hundred Greylag Geese are normally already here in the first decade and their numbers should increase during the month. It is also quite easy to see up to 10 species of ducks in a day, including the uncommon Red-crested Pochard.

If you like birds of prey, migrating Ospreys, Marsh Harriers, Honey Buzzards and Red Kites can be expected while Eurasian Hoobies are present until the beginning of October. It is also the right time to look for the first wintering Peregrine Falcons or a White-tailed Eagle.

We can also look for Black and Middle Spotted Woodpeckers or Short-toed Treecreepers in the nearby forests.

If you prefer passerines, we can look for Yellow and Grey Wagtails, Black and Common Redstarts, Northern Wheatear, Common Stonechat, Tree Sparrow among many other species.

As you see, September is definitely a very interesting month and you can hope to see up to 50 species of birds in a half-day trip and up to 70 in a one-day trip.
